Design and Technology

Design and Technology is seen as an important element of the children's broad and balanced education and is taught from the earliest of stages. Wherever possible, it is taught in context using observation and first hand experience to bring the subject matter to life. Although it necessitates the teaching of certain skills we try and do do this with the end product in mind. This, we feel, gives the subject purpose.


We recognise that Design and Technology prepares pupils to participate in tomorrow's rapidly changing technologies..."Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world." (The National Curriculum in England 2013 p.180.)


Our principle aims are to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
  • develop skills in developing, planning and communicating ideas.
  • work with a range of materials, tools, equipment and components, using them all appropriately and safely.
  • investigate and evaluate processes and products.
  • develop knowledge and understanding of materials and components.
  • develop and practise particular skills, understanding and knowledge through focussed practical tasks.
  • develop specific concepts and attitudes (such as innovation and experimentation) to further their understanding of the impact technology has in the home, the workplace and peoples lifestyles.
  • develop creativity through designing and making.
  • develop appropriate language and skills in order to appraise designs and purposefully evaluate tasks.
