At primary school, learning a foreign language is crucial for providing a valuable, social and cultural experience for all pupils. We aim to develop in our pupils, communication and literacy skills that will lay the foundation for future learning in a foreign language. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between the foreign language and English. Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multi-cultural world and gives them a richer insight into their own culture and those of others. In addition, it provides another platform for cross-curricular links and for the reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.

Specifically, the programme of study that the children follow has been carefully drawn up in association with our local secondary schools to ensure that the experience has maximum benefit and impact.

Our principle aims are to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
  • develop positives attitudes to, and enthusiasm for, learning a foreign language.
  • develop confidence in oracy, literacy and intercultural understanding.
