Key Stage 1

Our Key Stage 1 Class is taught by Miss Swain who is supported by Mrs Hale, our wonderful Teaching Assistant. The children in this class are in Years 1 and 2  and are taught in the oldest part of the school. We call this class 'Puffin Class'.

The children follow a two year rolling programme that ensures they experience a broad and balanced curriculum. The children are all taught according to their ability and not their age.

During the course of the day the staff deliver focused phonics sessions following the Letters and Sounds Programme; these are also differentiated according to the needs of the individual. Phonics has developed hugely in recent years and the teachers are more than happy to talk you through (should you so wish) how we now teach the letter sounds to the children.

The curriculum is largely thematically based and so, wherever possible, the various individual subjects are integrated; for example, as part of the children's work on Florence Nightingale they may design and make a replica patients' ward in Scutari Hospital.
